ULPA Acronym for Ultra Low Penetration Air (filter.) A filter standard requiring retention of 99.999% of particles in the very small 0.01 to 0.02µm size class. Because ULPAs are very restrictive of airflow, they are for exacting industrial applications, not an improvement over HEPAs for household uses.
UV Acronym for Ultraviolet radiation, often called "light," UV is used in air cleaners as an anti-microbial agent and as an energy source for photocatalytic oxidation.
Ultrafine Particles Particles approximately 0.02 to 0.1 micron. These are the pollutants we buy air cleaners to collect, despite the industry norm of focusing on much larger visible dust. Ultrafines can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter cells where they can reside permanently.
