Air Purifier Glossary: M-P

With so many acronyms and terms, the air purifier space can get confusing. Here are some frequently encountered stumbling blocks which begin with the letters "M" to "P." with my attempts at definition.

Media - Medium

Filtering material designed to capture and retain pollutants.


MERV

"Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value," an efficiency rating system applied to furnace filters. Irrelevant to room air purifiers.


MCS

Acronym for Multiple Chemical Sensitivity.


Micrometer (µm)

Technical measuring parameter for small particles. Same as Micron, below.


Micron

A micron is a technically obsolete shorthand for Micrometer. Since "micron" is still widely used in the room air cleaner business, it is applied here.

One-millionth of a meter.
One-thousandth of a millimeter.
.0025 inch.

A human hair averages around 75 microns in diameter.


Mold Abatement

The process of removing mold from building interiors. Often done by professional contractors, mold removal is a difficult, expensive process.

Mold will always return unless moisture sources are controlled.


Mold Remediation

Same as Abatement, above.


Mold Spore

Molds reproduce by exhaling tiny seeds called spores. These can become airborne, and are always present in indoor and outdoor air. Where mold colonies flourish, high indoor concentrations can become a health threat.


Most Penetrating Particle Size (MPPS)

Another area of mass confusion. MPPS is the particle size which most easily goes through a filter. .3 microns is used in the HEPA standard, but this does not mean that HEPA filters cannot retain particles smaller than .3 micron, as widely cited.

"down to .3 micron" "as small as .3 micron" are incorrect descriptions of a true-HEPA filter.

Negative Ion

An atom with more electrons than protons.

Negative ions attach to positively charged airborne particles, causing groups to form which are too heavy to remain airborne.

These fall to the floor - they are not retained or removed.

Negative ions were once marketed as having health benefits, until the FDA restricted their marketing to air cleaning.

OEM

Acronym for "Original Equipment Manufacturer."

Signifies replacement filters or parts are manufactured by the same company that built the original product.


OSHA

(Federal) Occupational Safety and Health Administration, a division of the Department of Labor.

Contrary to the assertions of some air cleaner marketers, OSHA does not set indoor air quality standards for residential applications - they set industrial exposure limits.


Off Gassing

See out-gassing, below.


Out-Gassing

Gradual release of molecules from materials used in construction or surface application.


Ozone

An unstable derivative of oxygen, used in some air cleaners to oxidize pollutants.

Ozone Generator

An air cleaner specifically designed for shock ozone treatments - prolonged high density oxidation cleansing.

Not safe for people and pets, for empty buildings only.

Particle Counter

A device, generally hand-held, to measure airborne particle densities and size distributions.

Useable devices are quite expensive.


Particle Sensor

A particle counter, by necessity a cheap version, used to offer automatic operation in modern air cleaners.


Passive Filtration

Refers to filters which pull air through a filter and trap pollutants, as opposed to active filtration, which destroys pollutants outside the purifier, genreally by oxidation.


PCO

Photocatalytic Oxidation

See Photocatalytic Air Purifiers


Plasma Ion

An air cleaning technique that emits boyh positive and negative ions into the air. This energy splits water vapor molecules, creating unstable radicals which oxidize pollutants in the air.

Leading brand names using plasma-ion technology are Sharp Plasmacluster and Winix Plasmawave.


Potassium Iodide

A chemical added to some premium gas/odor filter cartridges to destroy molecules which resist trapping, such as aldehydes.


Potassium Permanganate

Oxidizing chemical added to gas/odor filters to destroy aldehydes,hydrogen sulfide, and sulfur dioxide, which resist adsorption by activated carbon media.


Pre-Filter

A coarser filter in an upstream position, designed to protect finer filters, usually a main HEPA, from clogging with large particles prematurely.
