----------- N -----------
Negative Ion
An atom with more electrons than protons.
Negative ions attach to positively charged airborne particles, causing groups to form which are too heavy to remain airborne.
These fall to the floor - they are not retained or removed.
Negative ions were once marketed as having health benefits, until the FDA restricted their marketing to air cleaning.
----------- O -----------
OEM
Acronym for "Original Equipment Manufacturer."
Signifies replacement filters or parts are manufactured by the same company that built the original product.
OSHA
(Federal) Occupational Safety and Health Administration, a division of the Department of Labor.Contrary to the assertions of some air cleaner marketers, OSHA does not set indoor air quality standards for residential applications - they set industrial exposure limits.
Off Gassing
See out-gassing, below.
Out-Gassing
Gradual release of molecules from materials used in construction or surface application.
Ozone
An unstable derivative of oxygen, used in some air cleaners to oxidize pollutants.See Indoor Ozone Dangers for details.
Ozone Generator
An air cleaner specifically designed for shock ozone treatments - prolonged high density oxidation cleansing.
Not safe for people and pets, for empty buildings only.
----------- P -----------
Particle Counter
A device, generally hand-held, to measure airborne particle densities and size distributions.Useable devices are quite expensive.
Particle Sensor
A particle counter, by necessity a cheap version, used to offer automatic operation in modern air cleaners.
Passive Filtration
Refers to filters which pull air through a filter and trap pollutants, as opposed to active filtration, which destroys pollutants outside the purifier, genreally by oxidation.
PCO
See Photocatalytic Oxidation below.
Photocatalytic Oxidation
See Photocatalytic Air Purifiers
Plasma Ion
An air cleaning technique that emits boyh positive and negative ions into the air. This energy splits water vapor molecules, creating unstable radicals which oxidize pollutants in the air.
Leading brand names using plasma-ion technology are Sharp Plasmacluster and Winix Plasmawave.
Potassium Iodide
A chemical added to some premium gas/odor filter cartridges to destroy molecules which resist trapping, such as aldehydes.
Potassium Permanganate
Oxidizing chemical added to gas/odor filters to destroy aldehydes, hydrogen sulfide, and sulfur dioxide, which resist adsorption by activated carbon media.
Pre-Filter
A coarser filter in an upstream position, designed to protect finer filters, usually a main HEPA, from clogging with large particles prematurely.
