Re: Sharp Plasmacluster FU-W28E and Dyson Cyclone as air cleaner

A Reader writes:

Hi,

I was wondering, do you think something (Dyson cyclonic vacuum cleaner technology) like
Dyson cyclonic vacuum cleaner technology
could be used for air purification? (maybe as a first stage, replacing some of the filters)

I realize they are not selling air purifiers (yet) but I'm into the DIY camp anyway so as long as I could get the parts it wouldn't matter.

One disadvantage I'm guessing is that it might be a bit loud...

PS: I just ordered my first air purifier (a Sharp FUW28E, I realize it's not one of the models you recommend on the site but I figured out it's a good brand and they couldn't have gone much wrong, could they?)

A Reader.

Hey Reader;

Nothing really wrong with Sharp FUW28E, other than being a small and underpowered model.

I'd prefer to see a prefilter to extend HEPA life. FU-W28E's filters are slated for replacement every 2 years, as compared to 5 years in other Sharps.

There is a white plastic grid which could have been a fiberglass prefilter for just a buck more. I would hang a piece of polyurethane foam prefilter material on that grid to extend HEPA life.

The odor sensor and automated plasma-ion oxidizers look to be standard Sharp hardware. There is no remote, which I use heavily with my plasma-ion machines.

I recommend you buy at least one set of extra filters immediately, as these are a lower volume item which could be discontinued or unavailable in your location.

I cover the USA primarily, so just because I didn't mention a product developed for the Middle East and Africa doesn't mean it is unworthy.

The centrifugal technology used in the Dyson vacs is primarily useful for visible dust - 17 microns and up. While this could be used as a prefilter stage for a hypothetical air cleaner, it would be counter productive because the vac is picking up lots of large particulate from floors/carpets, whereas air purifiers are capturing mostly fine particles suspended on the air.

Dyson's system captures particles as small as 0.5 microns, but the great majority of airborne suspended particulate, (by numbers, not weight), is smaller.

Good concept anyhow.

Best wishes,

Ed
