Consumer Report: Air PurifiersThe first thing a buyer should know about purifiers is that many are ineffective and some even release dangerous ozone. Others, marketed aggressively,are not what they claim or appear to be. So many consumers do not realize that invisible volatile organic chemicals and very fine particulate matter will go right through most "purifiers." Manyare satisfied when visible dust build-up is reduced, unaware of the health hazards lower quality equipment does not remove. This report is a brief user's guide to purifier technology and manufacturers. Traditional purifying technologies fall into several broad categories; mechanical filters, electronics, gas phase adsorption, and ultraviolet light. Emerging techniques for purifying air are hydroxyl radical plasma and photocatalytic oxidation. High concentration ozone oxidation, called "shock" treatment, is for use by informed persons in unoccupied rooms only. Purification equipment makers come in all shapes and sizes; they run the gamut from questionable multilevel marketing organizations, slick advertising driven marketers, box-builders making medium grade particle removers, to hospital and cleanroom quality purification expert builders. I divide the residential market three tiers, a very general guideline to product quality. This rating is just my opinion, of course. It is merely a starting point for consumer research.
