Re: Blueair 650 Air Purifier for Cigar Smoking Room
A Reader writes: Hi Ed, I read your review today with great interest. I live in the northeast and my wife and I are currently adding a sun room ( 12x14) with plenty of windows and sliding French doors separating it from our main house. I and friends occasionally smoke cigars (especially while watching sports) and I am designing this room to accommodate this. I would estimate that we will use it for cigar smoking probably once every two weeks. So the inevitable question is which air purifier system would be best for this purpose. I can add a forced air ventilation fan also since we are in construction at this time. The only problem there is that we are heating the room and don't want to have constant cold air or heat loss from that. So I was wondering if you feel that the better units would suffice to remove the smoke and keep the room from acquiring a smell. I really would appreciate your input. Thanks in advance. A Reader.

Hey Reader; I can recommend air cleaners for your new sunroom, but notice the smoking disclaimer at the bottom of every page of air-purifier-power. No air purifier will have the level of effectiveness you seek, especially with respect to the odor. Assuming your 168 sq ft rec area is sealed off effectively from the rest of the house, a powerful machine like the bigger Blueairs (550 or better still 650) would be ideal. These are fast at particle clearing, to pull in smoke at a high rate. The SmokeStop filter option, while pricey, is the better performer on smoke. You might want to consider the electronic option (Blueair 605e/550e) which might work well if your group lights up sporadically. But this is also expensive, a tossup depending on your budget. For this application, Blueair is the best. Many other machines can clear the air after the smoking stops, but for entertaining a smoking group, you need the high throughput of a bigger Blueair. Filters are expensive, and depending on your goals and frequency of use, may need frequent replacement. You are correct to add a strong exhaust fan, despite the temperature gradient. Some have louvers that reduce the heat loss when inactive. Just running the fan after the game will help reduce the lingering odor. Also consider the furniture/flooring - something that won't absorb as much smoke, like wood and tile as opposed to plush and carpet, would be best. All I can guarantee is that smoke will be reduced, NOT completely eliminated. Best wishes, Ed
