New Air Purifier: Alen T300

Alen T300 HEPA Air Purifier $299

Alen TF30 HEPA Filter (2-pack) $49

Replacement uv bulb $59

Alen T300 is a recent addition to the air purifier market, from a company that promises the customer service often lacking in the air cleaning business.

Like the other Alens, it is difficult do do a thorough review, as not much information is available on t300s.

Dealers tend to simply reprint the company's brochure.

Not recommended for heavy smoke, gas and odor removal, the T300 Alen is a fair particle remover struggling to gain traction in the competitive stylish "tower" market segment.

I am on record against the tower trend, viewing it as style over substance.

The reduced footprint is desirable, but the upright design restricts airflow options for designers.

Plus, Dr. Freud could have a field day trying to figure out why people buy these tall machines.

Of course, everybody wants to get on the Ionic Breeze look-alike styling bandwagon, Alen can't be faulted for that.

In tests conducted by air-purifiers-america.com, the T300 removed 93% of the particles at the unit and 97% of the particles in the (small) room.

There are six mixed buyer reviews, with some product detail, at Amazon.com (opens new window, no commercial relationship);

Mid-priced Maintenance on Alens

alen t300 air purifier

The Alen T300's single, combined Pre-filter, true HEPA Filter and carbon filter makes filter changes easy.

Identical replacement HEPA/activated carbon filters fit the Alen T100 and T300 air purifiers.

The T100 utilizes one filter and the T300 utilizes two, stacked vertically.

The warranty-required 6 month change interval would cost only $80 per year.

The uv bulb, which needs annual replacement even if it still makes light, adds $59 to the bill.

These costs rank the tower air cleaner near the middle in cost to own.

Electronics include a digital display with simple button controls, filter change indicator, 4 fan speeds, and a 12 hour timer.

The filter monitor is a manually reset timer, not a sensor.

A prefilter, detachable from the HEPA media, is washable for reuse.

Low Noise, No Ozone

The T300 has a built-in manually switchable ionizer.

Alen states their ionizer is ozone free.

This machine has a UV lamp for bacterial control and a small photocatalyst screen, behind the uv lamp, for some oxidation of both chemical and biological pollutants.

Alen t300 air purifier noise levels are below average: 36 dBA on low, 60dBA on high.

Air-purifiers-america, which sells the Alens, says: "This is the quietest HEPA air purifier we have ever tested."

T300 is Not High Powered

Room size recommendation is up to 300 square feet, with 225 square feet recommended to achieve at least 4 air changes per hour.

The company did not participate in CADR testing, which is expensive for startups.

We'll have to use their room size rating to estimate air flow. 225 square feet in 8 foot ceilings is 1800 cubic feet, multiplication by 4 air changes hourly equals 7200 cubic feet per hour. Dividing by 60 minutes/hr gives 120 cubic feet per minute.

So estimated CADR (for rough comparison to mid-priced mass market units without significant chemical filtering capacity only) is 112, (120 x .93%).

I recommend 6 or better air changes per hour, which would limit Alen's T300 to a small bedroom, maybe 145 sq. ft.

The space saving "tower" design measures 11” x 9” x 28”, and is easily portable at only 11.3 lbs.

Energy consumption by fan speed is 20 Watts, 49W, 56W, and 65W. (Not 90-Watt as advertised on some vendor sites.)

Lifetime Warranty!

The company's name is pronounced "Allen".

Alen Corporation (formerly Alen Technologies Inc.), headquartered in Dunedin, Florida, drop ships units ordered from many web resellers.

Purifiers may also be ordered direct on the company website, www.alencorp.com.

The company pledges 95% of orders will be shipped within 24 hours, and that returns are hassle free.

They offer the industry’s first Lifetime Warranty coverage.

"Alen warrants your Alen Air Purifier to be free from defects in material or workmanship for as long as you own your air purifier.

Buyers must register and Participate in the Filter Replacement Program. Two replacement HEPA filters are shipped to you every year on your registration anniversary for as long as you own your machine."

Alen will repair or replace a defective T300 air purifier and pay freight costs of shipping the replacement unit.

Rating

Each of ten factors gets up to 10 points, 100 is perfect and very unlikely.

1. First do no harm; minimal out gassing, no ozone.

Score: 7 of 10, Company says ozone not an issue.

2. Serious gas and odor removal is a requirement if health benefits are expected: Units with real carbon VOC capability rank higher.

Score: 7 of 10, little carbon, but small photocatalytic grid helps remove chemicals.

3. Quality construction; case, gaskets, seals, and precision fitting eliminate bypassing and assure high efficiency at filtering sub-micron particles.

Score: 7 of 10, vertically stacked dual filters are the opposite of tight design.

4. The design maximizes the lifespan of each filter stage by allowing independent filter replacement. Ideally this is combined with electronic filter monitoring.

Score: 8 of 10, combined filter is cheap to replace.

5. Unit has long filter life, low maintenance requirements, and reasonable operating costs.

Score: 8 of 10, with ultraviolet light, T300 has middling operating costs.

6. Purifier produces low noise levels and meaningful air flow rates relative to noise.

Score: 8 of 10, below average on noise.

7. Manufacturer has a track record, with many units in the field and a reputation for supporting what they sell. Warranty period and average service life are long.

Score: 9 of 10, company has established itself, super warranty.

8. Purifier is a value in terms of price/performance ratio. Every price range should be included, “models above $1,200 are best”, while true, is not useful to most consumers.

Score: 7 of 10, a little pricey.

9. No dirt; unit and manufacturer should be devoid of class-action suits, high returns, recalls, consumer complaints, and legitimate negative consumer reviews.

Score: 9 of 10

10. Unit is stylish, portable, comfortable, and convenientfor consumer use.

Score: 10 of 10, easy interface, pretty space saving tower.

Among internet dealers, www.Sylvane.com stands out. Although this is a compensated endorsement, I have researched this company carefully. Here is what I found;

  • standard manufacturer's pricing adhered to, with no shipping charges for the lower 48 states, except on returns.

  • ships high percentage of orders with amazing speed.

  • 30 day liberal return policy, no restocking fees, user pays return shipping.

  • promptly responds to e-mail.

  • has e-Bay store with 870 feedback responses without a single complaint, 100% positive. Experienced e-Bayers know this is rare.

  • has Amazon store with 602 feedback responses, 95% positive, company responds to all negative remarks.

  • the very rare complaints involved customers who went outside the lines or events beyond sylvane.com control; 70 day returns, outside repairmen called in instead of returning item, shipping mistakes by carriers, manufacturer delays on parts...

  • secured hacker-proof connection accepts virtually all forms of payment.

  • no internet store is perfect, but Sylvane.com is among the best.

I routinely order filters from Sylvane.com, they arrive in 4 to 7 days with no discrepancies.
